Son of Demetrius II and his second wife, Phthia or/and Chryseis and father of Perseus. His mother was the daughter of Alexander II of Epirus and of Olympias II and sister of Pyrrhus II of the Molossi. He succeeded his father to the throne of the Macedonian kingdom in 221 BC. In 215 BC he allied with Hannibal, king of Carthage. Since 214-205 BC he fought against the Romans during the 1st Macedonian war. This was repeated during the period 200-197 BC, during the 2nd Macedonian war, that ended with the defeat of Philip in Cynoscephalae. Since 196-179 BC he consolidated again the power of Macedonia. After his death he was succeeded by his son Perseus.
