Son of Demetrius I Poliorcetes and Phila (daughter of Antipater), brother of Antigonus III Doson from a different mother and father of Demetrius II from his niece Phila II (daughter of Seleucus I Nicator and of his sister Stratonice). In 277 BC he gained a victory over the Galatians in Lysimacheia and was designated king of Macedonia. The Chremonidean war lasted during 268-261 BC, where Antigonus prevailed and conquered Athens. In 239 BC he was succeeded by his son Demetrius II.
