Son of Ptolemy IV Philopator and of the latter's sister and wife Arsinoe III. He was married to Cleopatra I, daughter of Antiochus III Megas (the Great) and Euboeα of Chalcis, and they had three children, Ptolemy VI Philometor, Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II and Cleopatra II. He succeeded his father in 204 BC and in the period 202-200 BC he fought against Antiochus III Megas during the 5th Syrian war, which ended with the victory of the latter. He was succeeded by his son Ptolemy VI.
