Son of Ptolemy I Soter and Berenice. His second wife was his sister Arsinoe II. With his first wife Arsinoe I, daughter of Lysimachus, he had three children, among whom Ptolemy III Euergetes. He succeeded his father after the latter's death. In the period 274-271 BC he confronted Antiochus I Soter during the 1st Syrian war, while from 260 until 253 BC approximately he confronted Antiochus II Theos, during the 2nd Syrian war. He was succeeded by his son Ptolemy III Euergetes.
