Son of Ptolemy II Philadelphus and Arsinoe I. He was married to Berenice, daughter of Magas I, and had three children, among whom Ptolemy IV Philopator. He succeeded his father after the latter's death. In 246 BC he confronted Seleucus II Callinicus, during the 3rd Syrian war. He was succeeded by his son Ptolemy IV Philopator.
