 Son of Antiochus III Megas and Euboea of Chalcis, brother of Seleucus IV Philopator and father of Antiochus V Eupator and Alexander Balas. He succeeded his brother to the throne. In the period 171-168 BC he fought against Ptolemy VI Philometor, during the 6th Syrian war.
