Son of Seleucus I Nicator and Apame I, daughter of Spitamenis. He married his stepmother, Stratonice (daughter of Demetrius Poliorcetes) who bore him Antiochus II Theos and three more children. He succeeded his father, after the latter had been assassinated by Ptolemy Ceraunus, in 281 BC. In the period 274-271 BC he confronted Ptolemy II Philadelphus, during the 1st Syrian war. He was succeeded by his son Antiochus II.
