Zeno: Byzantine emperor from 474 to 491. He was Leo I's son in law and father of Leo II, whom he succeeded to the throne after Leo II's sudden death. In the field of foreign policy Zeno encountered many difficulties, as he had to confront the raids and spread of the Vandals and the Ostrogoths at the west and the north of the empire. However, in domestic affairs he caused turmoil by supporting Monophysitic doctrines, policy which led to the Akakian Schism with the papacy.
