Forms of state intervention in the economy

State intervention was exercised in certain sectors of the Greek economy from the mid 1920s, in line with the established system. Public works - such as the drainage works carried out by Axios, Loudias, Strymonas and Kopaidas, road improvements, the construction of irrigation, water and sewage systems, the erection of public buildings etc. - not only created new jobs but also improved the prospects for production in the field of agriculture.
At the same time the Bank of Greece was established, which took over control of the country's external trade as well as the privilege of issuing currency.
In the same period a series of organizations were created under state control, having as their objective the management of significant agricultural products, like the Independent Raisin Association, the Animal Husbandry Fund, and agricultural credit such as the Agricultural Bank. After the proclamation of the dictatorship of the Fourth of August, state interventionism surrendered its place to a distinct paternalism aimed at consolidating state control in all areas of the social process.
