Introduction: Factors of economic development in the inter-war period

The Greek experience in the context of the economic crisis of the inter-war period demonstrates both the complex and close ties between the management of economy and the political situation; more specifically, of the interaction between the crisis of economic liberalism and the collapse of parliamentary democracy.
In the new model of the development process that emerged, the role of individuals and agents was dominant. Political figures such as Venizelos and Metaxas left their mark on the flow of events and the course of economic transformation through their policies. Next to these, industrialists and businessmen, credit institutions and state vehicles were activated in various ways, making huge profits - with a further contribution coming from the state.
