- It was the first time since 1928 that the American sprinters were defeated in the 100m. That important tradition was interrupted by a German athlete, Armin Hary, who had the lead from the beginning of the final leaving behind him the American David Sime and the British Peter Radford. Hary was an expert in swift starts, although in the final he was charged with a false start. Showing the start on television screens proved that he reacted to the firing of the gun much swifter than the other athletes. He won the gold medal causing great sensation.
- In the Olympic Games of Rome the competitive presence of the Soviet track female athletes caused a particular sensation. Among the most important of them were Irina Press, who won the gold medal in the 80m hurdles, her older sister, Tamara Press, who won the shot put and ranked second in the discus throw, and Nina Ponomaryova, who became first Olympic winner in the discus throw.
- Swedish Gert Fredriksson won his last Olympic medal in canoeing, winning the 1000m kayak double and the bronze medal in the kayak single. Between 1948, when he was already 29 years old, and 1960, he gathered six gold medals, a silver and a bronze in four Olympic organizations.
- After six Olympic organizations in a row, the field hockey Olympic team from India lost the gold medal to the team from Pakistan in the Games of 1960.
- For the first time the construction of the Olympic Village was influenced by the way it would be used after the end of the Games. The organizing committee gave the opportunity to the municipality of Rome to create a district, which, after the termination of the Games, would be in the service of students living in the city. Therefore, three-storeyed houses were built equipped with all facilities, like a modern village.
