Administration

s regards the administration, the recovery of Constantinople naturally brought about some changes, mostly in the European provinces of the Empire. The concentration of increased powers in the hands of the provincial governors, and the occupation of these posts by members of the nobility, strengthened the position of the latter and contributed to the gradual decentralisation of the state. During the reign of Michael VIII, changes were also noticeable in the imperial service, which came under Latin influence.
