The Summit of Athens 2001 (19-21 May 2001) entitled "Towards a new economy: The revolution of information" was co-organised by the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens and the Federation of Hellenic Information Technology Enterprises. The international congress took place under the auspices of the European Parliament and the cooperation of the Ministries of Finance, Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, Transports and Communications, Press and Mass Media and the European IT Services Association (EISA).
The official opening took place at Pnika on Saturday 19 May 2001, while the works of the congress continued on Sunday 20 and Monday 21 May at the "Grande Bretagne" hotel.
The congress attended important personalities from the political, business and scientific community, such as Mr Akis Tsohatzopoulos, Minister of National Defence, Mr Hristos Verelis, Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Dimitris Avramopoulos, Mayor of Athens, Mr Mihalis Bletsas, Director of Informatics of MIT - Media Lab., Mr Jacques Santer, Member of the European Parliament and former President of the European Committee, Mr Raymond Barre, former Prime Minister of France, Mr Nikolaos Garganas, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Greece and others.
At the same time with the proceedings of the congress, prearranged meetings between agents, enterprises and politicians took place, in order to promote business cooperation, exchange of opinions and to create "avenues of communication" among the participants from the USA, India, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapoure, the countries of the European Union, of the Central and Southeastern Europe, the countries of the Kaspian Sea, Africa and the countries of the Southeastern Mediterranean.
The Foundation of the Hellenic World participated for the third consecutive time in the event with a kiosk in the areas of the congress, in which the activities of "Hellenic Cosmos" and in general the programmes and the work of the Foundation were shown.
