On August 29-31, 1997, the National Technical University of Athens, sponsored by the European Commission President Mr. Jacques Santer, organised the international congress "The Athens Summit '97" on "Democracy and Development - the Role of Europe in World Economy". The congress took place at the Astir Palace Hotel.
The Foundation of the Hellenic World, one of the congress' donors, presented some of its work. The interactive journey through 3D reconstructions of the ancient Theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus, and the new Internet presentations (Hellenic Travellers: Chrysanthos Notaras, Mystras: The Byzantine City and its Monuments (1249-1460), and The Theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus) were singled out from amongst the Foundation's projects. The FHW's programme to create the Genealogical Tree of families who come from Asia Minor so that those concerned may trace back their origins and keep the memory of their ancestors alive was very warmly received.
The congress members were also impressed by a seven minute video, with background music by Greek composer Stavros Xarhakos, presenting a visual journey through 3D animated reconstructions of the ancient Theatre of Miletus, the ancient Theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus, and all the building reconstructions in 3D animated images of hellenistic Miletus.
The FHW's presentation received the best critics from fellow congress members and the speakers.
