On May 8-11, 1998, the Institute of Byzantine Research (E.I.E., Athens) and the Spyros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism (California, USA) organised the "Symposium on Byzantine Asia Minor (6th - 12th centuries)". The symposium took place at the National Research Foundation's amphitheatre.
Within the framework of this event, the Foundation of the Hellenic World presented the data bank on Hellenism of Asia Minor, which has as its objective to systematically collect, record, electronically organise and promote information in order to present, through history, the activities of Greeks in the greater area of Asia Minor. The data bank's four Archives (Geographical Terms, Built Environment, Historical Personalities and Historical and Political Events) were presented electronically as well as on printed material - a presentation that was warmly received.
The Foundation's Internet presentations also greatly impressed members of the symposium. Among these, most impressive was the 3D reconstruction, using VRML technology, of the ancient Theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus, which gave visitors the opportunity of touring the area and hearing actors recite verses of ancient tragedies.
