![]() | ![]() | Between 1836 and 1839 the popular painter P. Zographos was invited by Makrygiannis to create an iconography of the Greek War of Independence. The work was largely dictated by Makrygiannis as well as being based on the battle commentaries which accompany each painting. This is the first of the twenty paintings and its subject is the fulfilment of the plan of divine Providence for the liberation of Greece. Makrygiannis himself is pictured between Otto and Amalia, while clergymen, kings and representatives of the Great Powers are also present. |
