Justinian I: Emperor of Byzantium (527-565), responsible for a number of reforms and for an extensive building programme, which included the famous church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Thanks to his successful military expeditions he was able to restore the Byzantine empire to the territories it comprised in early Roman times. His portrait survives in the mosaic decorations of Hagia Sophia and in Ravenna, in Italy.
