Patriarchate: The term was initially attributed to the most eminent and respectable members of an episcopate. In the 6th century, Justinian defined the official status of the 5 Patriarchates comprising the administrative authority (pentarchy) of the Byzantine Church: namely those of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antiochia and Jerusalem. The number of Patriarchates was later increased.
