Bulgars - Bulgarian state: A pastoral people originating from central Asia. During their westward movement, one group, under the command of Asparuch, founded the Bulgarian state in 681 in the northern Balkans, intermarried with the Slavs of the area and became one people under the name of Bulgarians.
