Melankomas of Karia (boxer)
The ancient writer Dio Chrysostom mentions that Melankomas of Karia (in Asia Minor) was among the top boxers of antiquity because he managed to win most of his matches without being injured or injuring any of his opponents. This was considered to be extremely rare since boxing was associated with nose fractures as well as ear and face deformities.
Melankomas believed that to injure someone else, or to be injured yourself, was to show lack of bravery. He eventually left his opponents so exhausted that they would give up and admit defeat.
Melankomas achieved his first Olympic victory in A.D. 45, in the 206th Olympiad, while later on he achieved numerous victories in other competitions.
