The basic social structures in the Archaic period have many elements in common with most cities and regions of the Hellenic world. Specific differencing is mainly due to geomorphological and economic factors. At Athens, the forms of organization exhibit great variety and relatively loose hierarchical structure. Forms of organization on a kinship basis and other forms of organization on a local basis complement each other and span nearly all sectors of public life, from distribution of power to religious obligations and commercial activity. The composition of Athenian society can be looked at from various angles, such as place of residence or profession. But most versions converge to a population distribution based on economic and property criteria.
